DIET FOLLOWING SURGERY

It is very important to follow the eating and drinking instructions starting right after the operation to allow the new stomach structure to heal completely, and in the right position. It is important, especially in the early weeks not to stretch the small stomach pouch above the band.

Clear Liquid Diet (Post-op days 1 & 2)
You will be allowed ice chips, water and clear fluids in small amounts sipped slowly throughout the day. Your fluid allowance will be increased slowly over a few days. The goal during this early post-operative period is to protect the small stomach pouch. Only thin liquids can be tolerated at this time. It is important to keep hydrated with lots of water.

Full Liquid Diet (Post-op days 3 - 7)
You will be allowed full liquids but should avoid carbonated drinks as the carbonation could stretch the pouch and cause nausea and vomiting.

Mushy Foods (Weeks 2 )
You will now be allowed to have thin pureed foods, increasing the consistency slowly.

Soft Solid Foods (Week 3)
Soft easily chewed foods can now be added. All foods must be chewed well to the consistency of applesauce. Avoid tough dry foods and stringy foods.

You will now begin to gradually transition back into regular solid foods.

You will receive extensive education in how to be successful with your new eating plan, both before and at each visit after surgery.  The basic "operating instructions" for your new "TOOL" are:

Eat only three small meals a day

·

                             Eat slowly and chew thoroughly

·                            Stop eating as soon as you feel full

·                            Do not drink while eating

·                            Do not eat between meals

·                            Avoid dry or fibrous food

·                            Drink enough fluids during the day

·                            Drink only low-calorie liquids

·                            Exercise at least 30 minutes a day
